How To Win Max Battles In Pokemon GO (4-Man Guide)
Struggling to clear high-star Max Battles with only 4 players? This guide covers the optimal strategy for 4-manning tough Max Battles, including role assignments, move selection, and battle mechanics.
Quick Answer: Use a tank with a 0.5-second fast move and never throw charged moves. Swap to your attacker only during the Max Phase and always select your Max Move immediately.
Basic Guidelines
Follow these rules to maximize your team’s performance:
- Use a 0.5-second fast move — tap as fast as possible to charge the Max Meter
- Do NOT throw charged moves — they waste time and barely contribute to the Max Meter
- Bring out your attacker only during the Max Phase
- Always select your Max Move immediately when the Max Phase begins — don’t wait
- Reroll moves if necessary — back out of the battle to reroll for a better moveset
- Look for Power Spots with more gloves — more gloves means more helpers and a damage bonus
Why No Charged Moves?
Against 4, 5, or 6-star Max Battles, the boss has far too much health for a charged move to meaningfully contribute to charging the Max Meter. Energy toward the Max Meter is the same for every move until damage passes a very high threshold — one that simply isn’t reachable in high-star battles.
Your best option is to attack as often as possible to reach the Max Phase quickly, since the boss cannot attack during the Max Phase.
Example: A Gastly using nothing but fast moves outperforms most charged-move strategies against a Latios. See it in action: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/Sn_vHm5o3aw
Why Save Your Attacker for the Max Phase?
Your Max Attacker deals no meaningful damage outside of Max Moves. Keeping it alive and swapping in only during the Max Phase ensures it survives long enough to deal damage when it actually matters.
Additionally, the boss gains an attack multiplier if 6 minutes pass — so every second counts. Selecting your Max Move immediately rather than waiting saves precious seconds toward reaching the next Max Phase faster.
Roles
Tank (Defender)
The tank’s job is to absorb damage until the Max Phase arrives.
- Must have a 0.5-second fast move (e.g., Pound on Blissey)
- Use Max Guard to make the boss prioritize single-target attacks — this protects the rest of your team
- Never throw charged moves
- Recommended tanks: Zamazenta, Blissey, Lugia (reroll for Earthquake + Focus Blast moveset — can survive a targeted Thunder), Shuckle (with shields up)
Attacker
The attacker’s sole purpose is to deal damage during the Max Phase.
- Stay benched outside of Max Phases unless someone else is tanking
- GMax vs DMax:
- DMax power values (Lv1/2/3): 250 / 300 / 350
- GMax power values (Lv1/2/3): 350 / 400 / 450
- Only use DMax when the Pokemon has a very high Attack stat — a high-Attack DMax can outperform a low-Attack GMax (e.g., Lapras has low Attack, so a high-Attack DMax often does more)
- Recommended attackers:
- Zacian
- GMax: Cinderace → Machamp → Charizard
- DMax: Darmanitan → Metagross → Metal Claw Excadrill
Healer
- Only use Blissey — Max Spirit heals based on HP, and Blissey has the highest base HP in the game
- Max Spirit heals the entire team, not just yourself
Recommended composition for Regice: 2 Tanks + 1 Attacker
Helper Damage Bonus (Power Spot Gloves)
More helpers at the Power Spot increases your team’s damage:
| Icons | Helpers | Damage Bonus |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1 helper | +10% |
| 2 | 2–3 helpers | +15% |
| 3 | 4–14 helpers | +18.8% |
| 4 | 15+ helpers | +20% |
How to Actually Battle
Boss move mechanics:
- The boss has two moves: an AOE attack and a single-target attack
- The AOE hits everyone and cannot be dodged — just keep attacking through it
- The single-target attack is indicated by 3 yellow marks on a player — dodge as it appears, not after it starts flashing. Dodging correctly reduces the damage to the same as an AOE hit
Battle loop:
- Start with your tank and keep tapping fast moves — do not use charged moves
- Dodge single-target attacks when marked
- When the Max Phase begins, swap to your attacker and use your Max Move immediately
- If you’re the designated tank, use Max Guard or Max Spirit as needed — if you have 3 shields remaining, swap to your attacker instead
- Repeat until the boss faints
If you faint: Use the Cheer action — cheering fills the Max Meter by approximately 25%, so fainting players can still contribute meaningfully.
Rerolling Moves
If your tank or attacker has a bad moveset, back out of the battle before it starts to reroll. A better moveset — especially for tanks — increases survivability for your whole team and makes the fight significantly easier.
